The Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) is considering allocating the budget from the next financial year after verifying the efficiency of public universities. At the same time, the UGC has said that the allocation for research will be increased to build higher education institutions as centers of excellence.
The UGC announced the decision on Monday (October 19th) at the conclusion of a two-day budget meeting for public universities at the UGC Auditorium.
UGC Chairman Prof. Kazi Shahidullah joined the meeting virtually as the chief guest. Commission member Professor. Md. UGC member Prof. Dr. Abu Taher presided over the budget meeting. Muhammad Alamgir and Professor. Biswajit Chand spoke as a special guest. Secretary of the Commission (additional responsibilities) welcomed the meeting. Ferdous Zaman. The meeting was also attended by the department heads of UGC.
The UGC chairman said financial discipline is very much needed in public universities. Noting that there is no room for error in financial matters, he said, not a single penny can be discounted in this sector. He advised taking care so that the money allocated in the budget does not fall lazily. He requested all to perform their official duties in accordance with the laws of the university and the government and with the approval of the UGC.
Professor Dr. President’s speech. Abu Taher said the allocation for research would be increased so that the country’s public universities could become centers of excellence, maintain quality in education, and take a respectable place in the world rankings.
Regarding the next budget allocation in public universities, he said, the commission is thinking of allocating budget in public universities after evaluating the efficiency. Because, as the efficiency of the university decreases, the standard of the university as a whole goes down.
